OUR STORY

Passionate and in awe of the world around us, the idea for MAT(T)ERIAL and NATURE came to life in 1995, in the vibrant city of Montreal.

At MATT & NAT, we live by the motto, “live beautifully”. This means we appreciate and cherish the creativity and positivity found in all of us. We value social responsibility, excellence, inclusiveness, integrity, authenticity and, of course, love.

We have and will forever be committed to not using leather or any other animal based materials in our designs. Each season, we continue to explore and utilize innovative ways to improve our sustainable and eco-friendly ways, while still producing high-quality and timeless products.

Over the years, we have been experimenting with different recycled materials such as nylons, cardboard, rubber, cork and now windshield resins. Since 2007, we have been committed to using linings made solely of 100% recycled plastic bottles. Today, we are proud to announce that we recycle over 9 million plastic bottles annually in the manufacturing of our bags.

MATT & NAT collections can now be found in over 800 boutiques across Canada, the United States, the UK, Japan, Germany and Australia.

OUR MATERIALS

It’s important for us not to use leather. Simply put, we don’t like hurting animals and we deeply care about the welfare of the planet. Our collections are all designed by our close-knit team in Montreal, Quebec.

A variety of high quality vegan materials are used in the creation of our products. PU (polyurethane) is a biodegradable material, making it less harmful to our planet. In an attempt to divert away from the use of PVC, in FW20 we launched a capsule collection called the Purity collection. This collection has an outer body material made completely from PVB. PVB (polyvinyl butyral) is made of 100% recycled windshield glass resin. For SS21, we are proud to say that we have fully transitioned our Women’s Dwell collection which was previously made from PVC to PVB. This means that the collection is fully recycled, with the exception of the hardware.

Sustainable materials like nylon and rubber are also constantly sourced in the design process. More recently, we are testing fruit skin fibers, which will help us to push the boundaries even further with our materials. Moreover, all of our linings are made of 100% recycled plastic bottles. Approximately 21 plastic bottles are recycled for every bag we produce.

Having a sustainable product is very important to us. Our pieces are not made to last a season but are intended to be a part of your wardrobe for many years. That is why we perform several quality control tests on all new materials and styles for each season.

This is just the start for us and we are working hard to become fully sustainable by 2023. We embrace that we may not be perfect but it takes all of us to make small changes imperfectly to make a greater change globally.
